Junglans regia – walnut family

Liść orzechaWalnut wood is one of the most exclusive species. It is from precisely this wood that high quality furniture and floors are made.

In the past as well, walnut was used as a luxury wood – it belonged to the so-called delightful trees, which were grown only for pleasure.

Walnut is a tree of versatile use. Its wood is used in the production
of veneer, furniture, linings, hardwood floors, musical instruments, gun stocks and picture frames. It is also widely used in cosmetics and herbal remedies (leaves, shells, bark and fruit).

Around 15 species grow in the world, among which the Persian Walnut, Black Walnut and Butternut are found in Poland, along with the slightly rarer Heartnut and Japanese Walnut.

Curiosities

  • The oldest Persian Walnut in Poland grows in Celbowo in the Gdańsk Province. It is 129 years old, has a circumference of 291 cm,
    and a height of 23 m.
  • All parts of the Persian Walnut – boughs, bark, leaves and shells – contain juglone, a substance that limits the development of other plants, and which also permeates the base surrounding the tree.
For this reason, leaves that fall onto garden plots or flower patches are carefully gathered up; neither should they be used in compost.
  • In ancient beliefs, the magical features of Persian Walnut were: fertility, beauty and help in discovering hidden wisdom.
